A storage bed can add a surprising amount of space to a bedroom — but only if its dimensions suit the room. The annotated example above shows the measurements worth checking.
Mattress area
The example is sized for a 160 × 200 cm mattress. Always design the bed frame around the exact mattress you will use, with a small allowance so sheets tuck in easily.
Bed height
The example has a 45 cm bed height plus a 5 cm plinth. A height in this range is comfortable to sit on and stand up from for most adults; elders may prefer slightly higher.
Headboard
An overall headboard height of 110 cm, with a 60 cm upholstered panel above the mattress, gives comfortable back support for reading. Side pillars about 10 cm wide can house integrated lighting.
Drawer size and clearance
The pull-out drawer in the example is 35 cm high, 60 cm wide and runs 190 cm along the side of the bed. Remember that a drawer needs open floor space to pull out fully — plan at least as much clearance beside the bed as the drawer’s width, plus room to stand.
Drawers or hydraulic?
- Drawers are easy to reach daily — ideal for linen and frequently used items — but need side clearance.
- Hydraulic lift beds give access to the full area under the mattress and need no side clearance, but are less convenient for daily use.
